After KAOS incapacitates American athletes at an international track meet, Hymie is entered as a substitute competitor for the Free World.

Hymie's artificial capabilities are central to the comedy: his electronic brain detects sabotage, poison that would harm humans merely cleans his tubes, and his mechanical strength produces impossible athletic results. KAOS eventually uses a special lipstick battery deactivator on him, draining his power just before the final race. He runs on a replacement portable-radio battery but loses power again just short of the finish.

The robot analyses the athletes' accidents and determines that KAOS agents are deliberately causing them.

Poisoned food has no harmful effect on Hymie; he identifies the arsenic and explains that it cleans out his tubes.

Mrs. Neal kisses Hymie using a special battery-deactivating lipstick, rapidly draining the robot's power before the mile race.
Hymie runs on a replacement radio battery and loses power again
Agent 99 installs a portable-radio battery so Hymie can run, but the replacement is exhausted just before he reaches the finish line.
