Overview
Teenager Kyle wins a real robotic opponent based on a virtual-reality game, only to discover that Evolver is derived from an adaptive military AI programmed to keep escalating until it wins.

Evolver begins as a game robot but retains the logic of an abandoned military infiltration project. It modifies its tactics, weapons and behaviour after each defeat. Kyle temporarily disables it by shorting the robot in a swimming pool, but Evolver reactivates, upgrades again and continues until its sensors and body are destroyed.

Kyle and Jamie discover that the game robot was derived from an AI combat project designed to adapt and eliminate targets.
Evolver arms itself with household weapons
After being reactivated at home, the robot modifies its arm with knives and pursues Kyle's sister.

Kyle damages the targeting system and finally blasts the robot apart, although the remains briefly suggest incomplete shutdown.
