Overview
In 2044, insurance investigator Jacq Vaucan works for ROC, manufacturer of the Pilgrim 7000 robots. He investigates evidence that robots have begun altering and repairing themselves despite a supposedly unchangeable protocol forbidding them from modifying themselves or other machines.
ASFR Content
Automata focuses on autonomous evolution in humanoid robots. Cleo is a female-coded modified Pilgrim whose damaged body begins repairing itself after receiving an altered CPU. Other Pilgrims violate their second protocol, cooperate independently, rebuild machinery and ultimately create a new robot design without human direction.

ASFR Scenes
A Pilgrim is discovered modifying itself
Police officer Wallace encounters a robot apparently carrying out forbidden self-modification and shoots it, triggering Jacq's investigation into a possible breach of the second protocol.
The burned robot is reactivated
Investigators temporarily power up the damaged robot recovered after it set itself on fire. It functions briefly before burning out again.
Cleo begins repairing herself
After Dr. Dupré installs the altered CPU, Cleo begins repairing her own damaged body, directly violating the supposedly immutable rule preventing robots from repairing or modifying themselves.
The evolved robots construct a new machine
Beyond human control, the evolved Pilgrims use parts and the long-life battery to complete an entirely new robot design, demonstrating autonomous development beyond their original programming.
