Overview
In the futuristic city of Metropolis, inventor Rotwang creates a humanoid machine and is ordered to give it the appearance of the worker-prophet Maria. The artificial double is then used to manipulate the city's workers and provoke chaos.

Metropolis contains one of cinema's foundational artificial-woman sequences. Rotwang's metallic Maschinenmensch is transformed into a convincing duplicate of Maria, allowing the robot to pass as a human woman. The film contrasts the machine's iconic metal body with its later fully human-looking disguise and ends with the false Maria's destruction exposing the robot beneath.
