Overview
In a future where humanoid robots known as Mecha are commonplace, Cybertronics creates David, a prototype robotic child designed to experience love. After being imprinted on Monica Swinton and later abandoned, David searches for a way to become a real boy.

David's irreversible emotional imprinting is treated as programming, Gigolo Joe is an adult human-like Mecha, obsolete robots are graphically dismantled at the Flesh Fair, and David later discovers mass-produced copies of himself. Monica performs the irreversible imprinting procedure that programs David to love her as his mother, permanently changing his emotional behaviour.
Obsolete Mecha are dismantled at the Flesh Fair
Captured robots are publicly destroyed in an anti-Mecha spectacle using destructive machines and weapons. David narrowly avoids being dismantled because the crowd mistakes his realistic fear for evidence that he may be human.
David discovers mass-produced copies of himself
At Cybertronics, David finds multiple completed versions of his own model, including female variants, revealing that his human appearance and identity are commercially reproducible.
David loses power beneath the Blue Fairy
Trapped underwater, David repeats his request to become human until his internal power source is exhausted and he shuts down for roughly two thousand years.
David is reactivated two thousand years later
Advanced Mecha excavate David from the ice and restore him to operation, recovering his memories of humanity.
